The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has published the results of the public call for the development of rapid and ultra-rapid charging stations for electric vehicles, funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), Mission 2, Component 2, Investment 4.3. The initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of charging points across Italy, addressing both urban and extra-urban areas. Among the recipients of the allocated funds, a significant portion—733 charging stations—has been awarded from FastWay in major cities such as Rome, Milan, Turin, and Bologna.

The awarded projects reflect the Italian government’s commitment to expanding the country’s electric vehicle infrastructure, charging stations, urban hubs and key provincial cities, including Brescia, Padua, Parma, Piacenza, and Treviso, are among the areas set to benefit from this program, which aligns with Italy’s strategy to enhance sustainable mobility and address the country’s lag in electric vehicle adoption compared to other European nations.

Despite the ambitious scope of this initiative, challenges remain, particularly concerning the tight deadlines for implementing the charging stations. Industry leaders have emphasized the importance of streamlining authorization processes to ensure timely completion. Local governments and utility providers are being urged to accelerate permitting procedures and network connections to meet the program’s goals and contribute to the broader decarbonization targets set by the PNRR.

Paolo Esposto, a key figure in the sector, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between private operators and public institutions to overcome bureaucratic hurdles and advance Italy’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.
