Magna eDS Duo was born from a partnership strengthened through development and engineering services to, precisely, the production of the new electric model of Mercedes-Benz’s iconic off-road vehicle.

For decades, Magna has been a trusted partner of Mercedes-Benz, contributing to various vehicle systems, including powertrain, drivetrain, and electrification solutions. This enduring collaboration has led to numerous innovations, with Magna consistently delivering cutting-edge technologies that enhance vehicle performance and efficiency.

Dual-motor electric drive system

In 2024, Magna commenced production of the eDS Duo, a next-generation dual-motor electric drive system, at its Lannach, Austria facility. This advanced eDrive system is specifically designed for Mercedes-Benz’s all-new electric variant of its legendary off-roader.

Having supplied three generations of transfer cases for this vehicle, Magna is now equipping it with an electric drivetrain, demonstrating its seamless transition from traditional internal combustion solutions to state-of-the-art battery-electric technologies. The eDS Duo represents a milestone in electrified off-road mobility, offering unparalleled traction, efficiency, and performance.

Key Features and Innovations of the eDS Duo

The eDS Duo is a two-speed, dual e-motor drive system that covers a power range of up to 240 kW. This innovative setup delivers superior traction and off-road capabilities, making it a perfect fit for vehicles operating in extreme conditions.

One of the standout attributes of the eDS Duo is its wheel-individual propulsion system, which allows precise torque distribution to each wheel. This technology enables advanced off-road maneuvers, including the revolutionary “G-Turn”, which allows the vehicle to rotate 360 degrees in place. This feature significantly enhances the agility and maneuverability of the electric off-roader.

The system incorporates advanced silicon carbide power electronics, which reduce energy losses and improve thermal management, ultimately extending the vehicle’s range. Additionally, decoupling technology minimizes unnecessary energy consumption, ensuring optimal efficiency without compromising performance.

Off-Road Mobility

Magna’s flexible approach to powertrain solutions allows for smooth integration across different propulsion architectures, from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to fully electric vehicles (EVs). By developing the eDS Duo, Magna reinforces its commitment to innovation and sustainability, delivering a solution that meets the rigorous demands of off-road driving while paving the way for the future of electric mobility.
