ABB‘s Traction division recently announced the launch of Pro Series traction batteries, designed specifically for applications in transportation that require more energy, such as rail.
The Pro series traction battery pack is the latest addition to ABB’s large family of traction batteries and is designed to offer modularity and scalability, high performance, high safety level, and energy density in a compact design for hybrid and full electric rail applications.
The new Traction Battery Pro also offers long service life with more than 20,000 cycles and fast charging that enables an 80% recharge in 10 minutes.
Application cases include the case history with TMR for which ABB created a regenerative power solution to increase reliability and reduce the environmental impact of the Mont-Blanc Express, resulting in annual energy savings of 552 MWh.
In addition, in 2024 ABB Traction converted 44 metropolitan trainsets in the city of Adelaide to hybrid diesel operation, reducing noise and emissions for nearly 16 million commuters per year.
“ABB Traction batteries play a substantial role in promoting energy savings in the rail sector and have contributed to conversion projects around the world that have produced energy savings of up to 35 percent,” ABB said in a statement.
Edgar Keller, Division President Traction, said, “ABB is at the forefront of supporting the rail world’s decarbonization efforts through the development of state-of-the-art traction systems and solutions with intensive research and development. Our commitment to reducing energy consumption and introducing cleaner and more efficient technologies, such as the Pro series of traction batteries, supports the creation of a more sustainable rail industry, contributing to the achievement of ambitious global sustainability goals.”
