Pushing the performance envelope with ABB’s premium low voltage motors
Premium engines can transform industrial operations by incorporating advanced energy efficiency technologies supported by industry expertise and a commitment to sustainability.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) concluded in its recent Net Zero Roadmap update that the path to limiting global warming to 1.5°C by 2030 is very challenging but remains open. The good news is that 80 percent of the required emission reduction can come from known sources, such as improving energy efficiency.
This is especially important for industry, where few clean and cost-competitive energy options are available. Therefore, the best solution is to use existing energy resources as efficiently as possible. Motor-driven systems are a primary area of interest, as they account for 65 percent of industrial electricity use. They are also estimated to be responsible for 60 percent of the growth in energy demand over the past decade.
To illustrate the size of the opportunity, if the more than 300 million industrial electric-powered systems in operation today were replaced with optimized, high-efficiency alternatives, worldwide electricity consumption could be reduced by up to 10 percent, equal to more than Poland’s annual electricity consumption.
ABB’s premium motors match performance to application
Energy efficiency is critical, but it is only one aspect of motor performance, which must also include power, reliability, and durability. Continuous and reliable operation, without the risk of costly downtime, is essential for an engine to provide an excellent return on investment. That’s why ABB has incorporated more than 140 years of industry experience into its portfolio of premium motors designed to meet the specific needs of each industrial application.
For example, water and wastewater industries and HVAC systems consume a large amount of energy, and the demand is constantly increasing. This has prompted operators around the world to adopt ultra-premium efficiency IE5 synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) to keep processes running.

In the food and beverage industry, varying loads and speeds pose a challenge for processes such as chocolate production. This requires liquid-cooled SynRM technology to provide high power density and ultra-premium efficiency from an extremely compact footprint.
In the oil and gas sector, ABB’s ultra-high energy-efficient Increased Safety motor is the world’s first SynRM IE5 certified for potentially explosive atmospheres.
For machine building, particularly in the plastic processing industry, ABB’s High Dynamic Performance (HDP) motors are designed to provide a competitive advantage when designers seek high productivity levels and consistent quality. By providing high power in a small footprint, they create new opportunities for upgrading or developing new and innovative machines.

A new step in efficiency, for a more sustainable world
ABB’s proven synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) technology is the first magnetless design to achieve IE6 hyper-efficiency, a level of efficiency that ABB defines as a 20 percent reduction in energy losses compared to IE5 motors.

“Motor-driven systems in industrial facilities are major users of electricity and therefore maximizing their efficiency offers huge potential to cut emissions and help meet climate change targets. Using our new magnet-free SynRM motors reaching efficiency levels expected for future IE6 will also take energy savings to the next level”, says Francesco Morrone, Division Manager Motors & Generators – ABB Motion Italy.
ABB’s SynRM motors are part of the ABB EcoSolutions™ product portfolio, which enables customers and partners to make more sustainable choices by providing greater transparency about the circularity value and environmental impact of each product. This ensures informed and responsible decision making. Products in the portfolio comply with a set of key performance indicators defined in ABB’s Circularity Framework and have an external, third-party verified environmental product declaration (ISO 14025 Type III).
Expertise in the field is critical
As global clean energy policies intensify, industrial players in every sector will need to upgrade their technology. Investing now in energy-efficient engines will save money in the long run and help keep the world on track to meet carbon reduction targets.
Industry experience cannot be substituted when it comes to selecting the ideal engine. This is where ABB’s know-how and wide range of motors can make the difference in ensuring the levels of performance and reliability essential to optimizing total cost of ownership.
